The third annual Halloween Cross Weekend Cyclocross Stage Race was held October 28-29/06 at Kelso Conservation Area in Milton, Ontario. This race is becoming a popular stop on the Southern Ontario Cyclocross Series circuit. Turnout was up 20% from 2005, with 210 total riders participating! Even better, 74 riders participated both days, an increase of 32%!

Building on the success of last year's 2-stage race, this year's race featured an increased prize purse, draw prizes, on-site tech support, and a bike giveaway courtesy of Speed River Bicycle. Awards were presented to individual race winners, as well as the overall weekend champions.

We even got a little extra pre-race publicity when Speed River Cycling Club member Chris Redden made the cover of the OCA's Annual Cross Brochure!

Pictures from this year's event are posted in our Photo Gallery.

Speed River CC's Halloween Cross Weekend

By: Rod Olliver - www.cyclocrossontario.com - posted:Sun, 29/10/2006

Speed River CC's Halloween Cross Weekend was once again a favorite event in the Ontario CX calendar.

Saturday's weather made another muddy day. The course included two difficult runups, a tricky downhill section, a bridge and some grinds across muddy fields.

In the 11am start, we saw Dave Dermont(True North) take the early lead. Paul Greene(Chain Reaction) worked together with Adrian Jackson to try and pull Dave back, but it was to no avail as Dave pushed the pace hard. Saturday's race marked Paul's entry into the Master B field and this pushed Peter Hennessy off of the podium for the first time this year.

In the women's category, a visitor, racing in her first 'cross, walked away with the race. Ivonne Kraft - top 20 in the UCI MTB rankings, 13th at the 2006 Worlds in New Zealand was in Ontario visiting her new sponsors (Jet Fuel/La Carrera). They put together a cross bike for her and she put quite a bit of time on the series leader Holland Gidney. Carolyne Haill pushed to get her a 3rd spot on the podium.

The morning race did a good job of chewing up the all of good lines and while the rain stopped, the mud was very soupy for the 1pm race. Mike Garrigan(HBCC) pushed hard for his first win of the cross circuit 2006. Since winning the OCUP MTB series, Mike made appearances in several races in the US, including the GP of Gloucester. Dave Coughlin had another great race, finishing second once again. Dave moved up the series ranking to take top spot as of Saturday. Marco Li made his first appearance on the Ontario CX podium - an impressive finish for this newcomer. Erik Box from the Hub finished in fourth spot.

The Master A race was tight, with 8 racers coming in within 2 minutes of the leader. Lorne Anderson from La Bicicletta got his first win of the season after placing second at the Durham's mud fest last week. Glenn Cameron moved up the podium to the second place today, with third spot going to Peter Mogg. Surprisingly Matt Berridge from La Bicicletta slipped to fourth spot. This led to the top spot in the standings being temporarily shared between Berridge and his teammate Lorne. In a surprise twist, series favorite Steve Heck was DQ'd for taking mechanical assistance outside of the pits. Dissappointing for him to be pulled from the results today, but a reminder for racers to heed the warnings of the comissaires at the beginning of the race.

If Saturday was a mud-fest, Sunday left the cyclo-cross gods throwing the rest of the book at the racers. Rain, hail, snow and high winds were all features of the race, along with a quick course. Today's route offering added the beach and stairs, a run up the muddy hill we had gone down on Saturday, a log barrier along with other tricks.

The 11am race started the day off with Dave Dermont and Paul Greene sticking together for the entire race. Both racers tried to attack each other at various spots on the course, but it was left to a sprint finish. Paul snuck through on the inside of the final corner and outsprinted Dave for the win. Adrian Jackson filled out the podium, riding by himself for most of the race.

In the women's race, Ivonne Kraft once again raced hard, but with a tougher field she didn't have as big a lead on second place Amanda Sin. Karen Watson made her second podium appearance of the season, while Holland Gidney placed fourth.

The Senior men's afernoon start was also a tougher field. Nathan Chown(Cyclissimo) and Peter Morse(Jet Fuel) came out and helped to make for an exciting race. Mike Garrigan had another great ride, beating Peter Morse by 20 seconds. Peter just couldn't hold on to Garrigan, who was having a terrific ride. Andrew Watson, who didn't finish on Saturday, was 3rd place. Dave Coughlin and Nathan Chown were in a back and forth battle for 4th position, with Dave taking it at the end. With Peter's second place on Sunday and Mike Garrigan's two wins, the series lead is now tied, while Sunday's results knocked David Coughlin to third place in the series, taking away his overnight lead.

The Master A field had a good mix-up for spots on the podium, with Jon Barnes of Sport Swap taking the win. Lorne Anderson placed second, securing his top spot in the series standings. Andrew Croutch was third, knocking Glenn Cameron off the podium. Matt Berridge, the series' early leader, had another disappointing ride due to a crash on the bridge. This slips him to second spot in the standings today. The Master A field is proving to be one of the most hotly contested races, with 42 starters, the podium spots and rankings are changing often.

Thanks go to the Speed River Cycling Club for putting on another great race. They do a great job of getting us into this venue and have great volunteer and sponsor support. A bike giveway topped off the 'door' prizes and many Pedro's products were given out. Prizes were also given away for best costumes. The only thing missing was those Wellys - don't lose the beer sponsors guys.
