CLUB RIDE OVERVIEW

The Speed River Cycling Club organizes weekly group training rides. Participation in these rides is open to club members only.

Please understand that SRCC cannot allow non-members to join our rides, even with a valid OCA/UCI race license. The insurance coverage provided through our affiliation with the OCA prohibits this practice. We must insist that everyone join the SRCC if they plan on doing any riding with us at all.

The number of organized rides that we offer each week is directly tied to the number of volunteer ride coordinators.

Ride Coordinators

Each club ride is organized by one of our volunteer ride coordinators. These are the take-charge individuals that act as the face of the SRCC during each ride. They get the ride started, ensure everyone knows the route, and if necessary, ensure club ride policies (see below) are adhered to.

A minimum of one ride coordinator is required for each club ride. But we'd like to have at least two ride coordinators identified for each regularly scheduled ride, to allow for possible unexpected scheduling conflicts.

If you'd like to become a volunteer ride coordinator please send us an email.

Ride Rules

As part of our affiliation with the Ontario Cycling Association there are numerous requirements that must be met to ensure our insurance coverage and club affiliation remain valid. These requirements, plus the requirements of our club constitution, form the basis for the "rules" to be followed during our club rides.

All rides depart promptly at the designated start time, and are cancelled in case of rain or snow.

It is important that all club members, and not just the ride coordinators, be aware of and follow these rules.

  • only SRCC members may participate in club rides;
    • the club will allow out-of-town riders to participate on an occasional basis provided that approval is obtained in advance from the SRCC Executive;
  • all participants must abide by the SRCC Risk Management Plan and the Highway Traffic Act;
  • a certified helmet must be worn at all times;
  • members are responsible for bringing enough food, water, tools, and supplies to last for the entire ride;
  • bicycles must be in good mechanical order;
  • rides may be cancelled due to inclimate weather;
  • all club rides must be appropriated planned and reported to the OCA in advance as per the OCA Insurance Guidelines (i.e. there shall not be impromptu club rides)
A copy of these ride rules can be downloaded here.

Road Ride Etiquette

The following outlines some safety and etiquette tips that should be followed while participating in group road rides:
  • no crossing the yellow line...ever;
  • no riding more than two abreast, always staying as tight as conditions and ability will allow;
  • point out cars, potholes and any other hazard for the riders behind;
  • no stretching out on the elbow pads of aero-bars while riding in a group...ever;
  • no "half wheeling", ride either fully beside other riders or fully in front/back
  • echelon clockwise for safety and consistency.

Pace of Rides

Club rides may be categorized as EASY, MODERATE, or FAST to give an indication of the anticipated effort or speed required. We are hoping to make the rides more enjoyable for all club members by ensuring everyone has a clear expectation of what type of ride to expect before heading out on a ride. Members are asked to respect this categorization and not take offense if the ride coordinator indicates the member may need to modify their expectations for a particular ride.

EASY - ride will be at relaxed pace, average speed on road <27km/hr, group will ride together, frequent stops to ensure group is together, suitable as a recovery or LSD ride, suitable for inexperienced or less-fit riders, technical skills advice available.

MODERATE - ride will be at steady moderate pace with brief periods at higher speed, average speed on road 27-30km/hr, group will ride together but may split for brief periods, pace will slow to allow for regrouping, infrequent stops (usually only for clarification of directions), requires moderate fitness and technical skills.

FAST - ride will be at steady moderate to fast pace with sustained periods at higher speed, average speed on road >30km/hr, group will ride together but may split for brief periods (as during intervals or climbs), pace may slow to allow for regrouping but slower riders may get dropped, group may split into smaller groups if numbers warrant, infrequent stops (usually only for clarification of directions), requires good fitness and technical skills.
